about Rokuouin
Famous for its beautiful garden especially in autumn foliage season, this Zen temple was founded in 1379 by the shogun “Ashikaga Yoshimitsu” during Muromachi period. In harmoniously integrated with nature, this temple boasts its long history and rich cultural heritages (including statues, ancient documents, paintings, and some from China), so we can say “hidden gem of Kyoto”.
Atmosphere
Some of the temple buildings have still survived the architectural style from when they were originally constructed, reflecting the simple, serene spirit of Zen in the whole garden.
Passing through a corridor, you will find a landscape open, which incorporates the scenic Mt. Arashiyama as a backdrop. Covered in moss, the space features arrangements of stones and plantings, creating an atmosphere full of tranquility and serenity.
The name “Rokuouin” is inspired by an event where a herd of deer appeared, as well as the legendary Deer King from the Deer Park, where Buddha gave his first sermon.
Highlight
In the quiet of the night, the garden, adorned with autumn foliage and bamboo groves, is illuminated, creating a fantastic atmosphere as you proceed along the path. The autumn leaves gently lit, reveal a unique beauty different from the daytime, offering visitors a memorable experience.
On the serene night, the historic Zen temple merges with the vibrant colors of autumn leaves and bamboo, providing a rare opportunity for visitors, especially those from abroad, to feel the essence of Japan’s autumn.
